SECOPA's Environmental Conservation Initiatives
At SECOPA, our commitment to safeguarding the environment goes hand in hand with empowering communities. Through various conservation projects, we aim to protect natural resources while creating sustainable livelihoods for local communities in Mtwara and beyond. Below is a showcase of our key environmental activities, highlighting how we are making a positive impact on both nature and people.
1: Beekeeping: A Sustainable Solution for Conservation and Livelihoods

- funded by UNDP
Beekeeping is one of the flagship projects of SECOPA, designed not only to support environmental conservation but also to provide sustainable livelihoods for local communities. The initiative focuses on introducing beehive farming in rural areas, particularly those affected by deforestation and environmental degradation. Through this project, communities are empowered to protect their natural resources while benefiting economically from honey production and other bee-related products

Through our Beekeeping Program, we aim to:
- Promote environmental conservation by preventing deforestation and promoting the protection of forest ecosystems. The presence of beehives discourages the cutting down of trees, as communities understand the value of keeping trees for honey production.
- Support sustainable livelihoods by providing community members, especially women and youth, with the skills and resources needed to establish and manage beehives. This creates a source of income through honey production while fostering environmental stewardship.
- Increase awareness on biodiversity by highlighting the critical role that bees play in pollination and ecosystem health. Communities are educated on the value of maintaining local flora and fauna through beekeeping practices.
This initiative not only addresses environmental conservation but also offers an economic lifeline to many families, contributing to poverty alleviation and sustainable development across the region. By combining ecological responsibility with economic empowerment, we are achieving our goal of creating a positive, long-lasting impact.
2:Seaweed Farming: Empowering Women and Youth through Sustainable Aquaculture

- funded by UNDP
At SECOPA, we are committed to fostering sustainable development and empowering communities. One of our key initiatives is seaweed farming, a form of aquaculture that is creating economic opportunities for both women and youth in coastal areas. Seaweed farming is not only an environmentally friendly practice but also a vital source of income for many families.
Through this initiative, we aim to:
- Empower women and youth by providing them with training and resources to start and manage seaweed farms. This creates new economic opportunities and enhances financial independence within these groups.
- Promote sustainable livelihoods as seaweed farming is low-impact and environmentally sustainable, requiring no chemicals or fertilizers. This allows communities to benefit economically without causing harm to marine ecosystems..
- Enhance climate resilience by contributing to the mitigation of climate change. Seaweed farms help absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and protect coastlines from erosion, creating a more resilient environment for coastal communities.
By equipping women and youth with the skills and support needed to succeed in seaweed farming, SECOPA is helping them build sustainable futures while promoting environmental stewardship. This initiative not only uplifts local communities but also contributes to the long-term conservation of marine resources.
3: Coastal Beach Cleanliness: Protecting Our Shores for Future Generations

At SECOPA, we are committed to preserving the beauty and health of Tanzania’s coastal regions through our Coastal Beach Cleanliness initiative. The beaches of the Mtwara region are not only vital to the environment but also serve as important hubs for tourism, fishing, and community life. However, pollution and waste have increasingly threatened these precious ecosystems.
Key Objectives of the Coastal Beach Cleanliness Initiative:
- Environmental Protection: Beaches play a crucial role in protecting marine life, serving as habitats for a variety of species. By keeping our beaches clean, we prevent plastic, waste, and other pollutants from entering the ocean and harming aquatic ecosystems.
- Community Engagement: We involve local communities, especially women, youth, and fishermen, in regular beach clean-ups. This builds a sense of ownership and responsibility towards their environment, empowering them to take an active role in conservation efforts.
- Promoting Eco-Tourism: Clean beaches are more attractive to tourists, which boosts the local economy. Our beach cleanliness drives also aim to create sustainable tourism opportunities, where visitors are encouraged to respect and protect the environment.
- Education and Awareness: Beyond clean-ups, SECOPA focuses on educating local communities about the importance of keeping beaches clean. We conduct workshops and campaigns to raise awareness about the negative impact of pollution and the benefits of maintaining clean coastal areas.
Long-Term Impact: By maintaining clean beaches, we not only protect marine life but also enhance the quality of life for coastal communities. Cleaner beaches lead to healthier marine ecosystems, more tourism opportunities, and sustainable livelihoods for those who depend on the ocean’s resources.
